Barack Obama was sworn in on Sunday as the 44th President of the United States, an official act overseen by Chief Justice John Roberts, in advance of the inaugural ceremonies on Monday. The White House released a new official portrait of the President, taken in the Oval Office last month, for government use in the second term.

Is a second official photo necessary?

If nothing else, it shows how much four years can age a President. The Washington Post even has a new feature comparing the iconic pictures, with a breakdown of how Obama’s face shows “deeper creases” and whiter hair. One doctor told the Post that Presidents typically age abnormally fast because — you guessed it — they are “chronically” exposed to an unusual level of stress.

It’s always uplifting and encouraging to see people so wholeheartedly taking theirs seriously, like, Senator Mitch McConnell.

Apparently Senator McConnell (if we can even presume to call him that after his WINNING on the Senate floor) tried to call the Democrats’ bluff and bring up a vote to end the whole fiscal cliff debacle (NB - still don’t QUITE get what it means - but it seems mostly like Republicans are being douches again.) In any case, the Democrats actually stepped up to the challenge, leaving Senator McConnell in the awkward position of WASTING EVERYONES’ time and filibustering his own proposal.

Now, really. Tax payers pay a lot of money and have been putting up with plenty of shit from the GOP (Grouchy Old Party), but this really takes the cake. For the first time in history, a slimy politician used one of the worst political inventions against himself to commit a sort of policymaker suicide.

I hope that one day I can get ridiculous vacation benefits, state funded healthcare, and plenty of other paid benefits like these guys… for doing absolutely nothing.

This Mother Jones article spells out what the federal government should / could do to avoid the oncoming “fiscal cliff”. NB - although I have a vague understanding of what that means, it seems to be something to do with upcoming federal government budget talks and the fact that Obama (swoons) should not be afraid to show some moxie when dealing with the GOP (douches). In any case, Mother Jones (love her) spells it all out:

1) stop giving discounts to the uber wealthy (get rid of Romney-esque tax loopholes that let gents of his ilk pay virtually nothing in taxes).

2) stop tax loopholes for extremely wealthy homeowners.

3) stop tax loopholes for stuff like inheritance. People used to pay 55%!

there was a lot more blah blah blah, but basically it says, MAKE THE WEALTHY PAY!

This is my new Buzzfeed style list post to the tune of “why can’t we all just get along?”

This week has been riddled with scandalous and upsetting news. Starting with General Petraeus’ inability to keep his junk in his pants and finishing with the escalation of a pretty big deal conflict in the Middle East. Let’s see what the news has for us this Monday.

This article really helped me understand the shitshow that is current politics in the Middle East. Personally, I see it as all wrong; it’s really hard to understand the good guy from the bad guy, but in the end it just seems like the history of this region is fraught with overlapping civilizations and empires vying for a piece of turf. Seeing the fact that rockets can target innocent people in Tel Aviv and Jersualem is pretty ghastly though. Who knows?

This is a gem. A former army commander and brilliant military mind’s junk got him in trouble. All I can say is “keep it in your pants, guys!” The more you hide it, the more you cheat, the worse it only gets.
